The D&D Story Women Owned

My name is Derin Narin, and I completed my four-year BA degree in Business Administration and Marketing at Boston University. I am proud to represent the 4th generation in my family’s businesses operating both in Turkey and the USA. Our family story began in 1957, when my great-grandfather laid the foundation of our legacy. He was the pioneer behind the concept that later inspired Crocs plastic shoes, and by the 1960s, he managed the largest production facility in Turkey with over 400 employees. In the 1970s, my grandfather Mehmet Narin started trading pasta, tomato paste, dried nuts, and dried fruits at just 20 years old—with no financial support. Thanks to his fluency in Arabic and Turkish, he quickly built a strong presence in the Middle East and North Africa. He served as the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Antakya for nearly 25 years, becoming a respected leader in the food sector. His expertise later helped establish food manufacturing plants across the globe. Today, our family business owns and operates six food factories and bonded warehouses in Turkey and abroad, exporting foodstuffs and agricultural commodities to 57 countries worldwide. Education has always been a core value in our family. My grandfather sent both his sons, including my father Rasim Narin, and his daughter to study in the UK and Switzerland. That tradition continued with my sister Duru and me—we were raised and educated overseas, carrying forward the vision of our family. With my father’s guidance, I established my own company in mid-2023. As my grandfather used to say, “I’ve eaten a lot of dust”—a phrase that reminds me how much he endured, and how those challenges now feel like low-hanging fruit. From a young age, my sister and I worked hands-on during summer holidays, which gave me the courage and confidence to build something of my own with bold, blue-sky thinking. I know that to many, “D&D” may just be a name. But to me, it stands for a legacy built on hard work, vision, and perseverance. I’m proud to continue the journey my family started, and to shape the future of D&D with heart, grit, and resilience.
